Held on the beautiful Sunshine Coast on 21 May 2022, the Australian Wearable Art Festival (AWAF) gave attendees the opportunity to glimpse into the extraordinary imagination of Australian and international designers and artists. Showcasing costume designers, fashion designers, sculptors and seamstresses, their wearable-art masterpieces competed in four categories: Trashion, Sustainable Nature, Floriana and Avant-garde.

The annual gala event featured the artistry of some of the world’s most talented designers, including that of Queenslander Cindy Vogels, known for her work dressing celebrities such as Lady Gaga and featuring in a successful campaign with Christian Louboutin.

I was fortunate to attend the event with colleagues from my department at Sunshine Beach State High School. We enjoyed a show that entertained, captivated and inspired. AWAF provided a stunning platform for the industry and allowed the community to support designers and artists from all over the world. The event encouraged participants to place a greater value on the arts industry and on the work of upcoming and future designers.

It was a privilege to see a previous Sunshine Beach State High School student showcase his work and take out Best Headpiece on the night.

The experience allowed me to reflect on how I could incorporate design elements in the classroom and inspire future generations! The night, in which high-end fashion and art collided, was a huge success and I look forward to attending in 2023.
